February: Cultivating a Community of Kindness

For the month of February, we’re focusing on kindness and the importance of cultivating a community where everyone feels valued and cared for. Through small acts of kindness—like offering a helping hand, using kind words, or including others—we can make a big difference in our school environment. Students will be encouraged to spread kindness both inside and outside the classroom, and we’ll explore how kindness helps build strong friendships, create a positive atmosphere, and make everyone feel welcome. Together, we can make our school a place where kindness grows every day!

Teachers/students will talking about kindness and doing activities throughout the month. February 26th is Pink Shirt Day and we invite students to wear pink if they would like. We will have pink day stickers available for students as well.

Here are some fun and meaningful kindness activities that kids can try:

  1. Compliment Chain – Have students give compliments to one another, starting with a simple, genuine compliment. It can be about someone's work, personality, or something they did that was kind.

  2. Random Acts of Kindness – Encourage kids to perform small, unexpected acts of kindness, like holding the door for someone, helping a classmate with their work, or picking up litter around the school.

  3. Kindness Jar – Create a "Kindness Jar" in the classroom where students can write down acts of kindness they’ve seen or done throughout the week. At the end of the week, read them aloud and celebrate the positive actions.

  4. Kindness Cards – Have students make "Kindness Cards" to give to others. They can write kind messages or draw pictures that will brighten someone’s day.

  5. Thank You Notes – Encourage children to write thank-you notes to someone who has helped them, whether it's a teacher, friend, or family member, to show appreciation.

  6. Buddy System – Pair students up as "buddies" to help each other throughout the day—whether it’s with assignments, playing games at recess, or simply being a friendly face.

  7. Kindness Pledge – Have students take a "Kindness Pledge" where they promise to show kindness to others each day, and make a poster for the classroom to remind everyone of their commitment.

  8. Read Aloud Kindness Books – Choose books with positive themes about kindness, such as "The Kindness Book" by Todd Parr, and discuss the lessons they teach.

  9. Kindness Scavenger Hunt – Create a kindness scavenger hunt where kids look for opportunities to do specific kind actions during the day, such as “help a friend,” “smile at someone,” or “share something.”

  10. Kindness Tree – Set up a "Kindness Tree" in the classroom where students add a leaf with a kind deed they've done or witnessed. Watch the tree grow throughout the month!

These activities help build a positive, supportive environment where kindness is practiced and celebrated daily.
